Becoming Orthodox – A New Creed

“A New Creed” is an affirmation of faith used widely in the worship services of the United Church of Canada. It was originally adopted in 1968 by the 23rd General Council. Originally known as “A Contemporary Expression of Christian Faith,” it began with the line “Man is not alone.” It was amended in 1980 to make its language inclusive.

The creed is not meant to replace the ancient Apostles’ Creed or the Nicene Creed, but to act as a supplement to these statements of faith.

We are not alone,

We live in God’s world. 

We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus,
the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others
by the Spirit. 

We trust in God.

We are called to be the Church:
to celebrate God’s presence,
to live with respect in Creation,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope. 

In life, in death,
in life beyond death,
God is with us. 

We are not alone.

Becoming Orthodox – Korean Faith Creed

A Statement of Faith of the Korean Methodist Church was adopted by the Korean United Methodist Church when it was organized in 1930. An English translation appeared in the 1935 and 1966 Methodist hymnals. When it was being considered for inclusion in the present hymnal, Korean-American United Methodists pointed out that certain parts of the existing English translation did not adequately translate the original Korean. It was retranslated into the version now in use.

We believe in the one God,
creator and sustainer of all things, Father of all nations,
the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love.
We believe in Jesus Christ,
God manifest in the flesh,
our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength.
We believe in the forgiveness of sins,
in the life of love and prayer,
and in grace equal to every need.
We believe in the Word of God
contained in the Old and New Testaments
as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice.
We believe in the church,
those who are united in the living Lord
for the purpose of worship and service.
We believe in the reign of God
as the divine will realized in human society,
and in the family of God,
where we are all brothers and sisters.
We believe in the final triumph of righteousness
and in the life everlasting. Amen.
